Bindner Academy Profile

Providing a Culture of Excellence since 1997!

Established in 1997, Tactical Defense Solutions (TDS), started off as a part time, one man defensive tactics training company, that offered specific training to executive and close protection professionals (bodyguards), and door persons (bouncers). Training was only offered privately, and in small groups because of limited space. As the popularity of our training grew, to include law enforcement professionals, Derek Bindner was encouraged to expand to a larger facility, and feature regular classes. On October 1st, 2000, TDS opened its doors at 205 Oxford Street at Richmond, offering full time instruction to the general public in Aikido, Jiu-jitsu, Self-Protection, Yoga, and kickboxing. Due to rapid growth, in 2003, TDS expanded it’s facilities to the corner of (1255) Commissioners Rd. at Boler Road in Byron. At this time, the name was changed to Aikido Network/Reliance Jiu-Jitsu, to better reflect a martial arts school. In 2005 Reliance Jiu-Jitsu was the first school in the London region, to officially offer classes in Brazilian (Gracie) Jiu-jitsu, under Canada’s first BJJ black belt, professor Dan Moroney, of the Royler Gracie/David Adiv Network.

On July 1st, 2006, the school moved to 1615 North Routledge Park, unit 6, in Hyde Park. It held classes with 1500 sq. ft. of space, for the next five years, and became an official Alliance Brazilian Jiu-jitsu affiliate.

Then, on September 1st, 2011, in a meaningful and purposeful way, the academy doubled it’s physical space to 3000 sq. ft., and moved 145 paces North, to it’s current headquarters, units 18 & 19, at the same address.

In 2015, four more, part time locations were opened, one in downtown London, one in Byron, one in Delaware, and one in Sherbrooke, Quebec.

Late in 2018, because of the growing popularity in every program, the big decision was made to unite all programs under one “umbrella”, and in December, Bindner Academy was formed.

If you have a group, organization, business, or school that is looking for a martial arts and leadership program, and would like to incorporate regular on-going classes, or an 8-week course, or an hour workshop, Bindner Academy customizes programs to suit your needs as required.

Academy Instructor

Tyler Crawford, BJJ Black Belt

Tyler’s involvement in combative sports started many (yes, MANY) years ago in freestyle wrestling. Through his involvement in wrestling he learned the importance of hard training and focus as determinants of success. His first experience in traditional martial arts was in Judo, followed soon after by Karate in which he earned his black belt. Tyler was drawn to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu as a self-defense method that allows the practitioner to neutralize physical threats without seriously injuring the attacker, and for the ability to train and practice at nearly-full intensity. After training and successfully competing in Jiu Jitsu for several years (earning multiple gold and silver medals), he has become an enthusiastic advocate for the sport. Having earned his brown belt in 2014, and black belt in 2019, Tyler is very interested in helping people develop to their full potential in Jiu Jitsu. His goal is to see others find a love for this great sport and discipline, just as he has.
